MAY 2009    WE’RE GROWING

As we listened to the feedback from the teachers at our 2008 Teacher BookShare event, it became apparent to us that we are doing something teachers need…giving them free books.  After some discussion and planning with our colleagues at Turning the Page, we decided to hold two Teacher BookShare events in May 2009 at two of TTP’s schools, Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary and Browne Educational Campus, inviting ALL of the faculty and staff from ALL seven of their partner schools for the 2008-09 school year.

Instead of the four book drives we helped to organize last year, we have book drives occurring at seven schools:  Barrie School, The Field School, Green Acres School, Mclean School, Sheridan School, Lone Oak Montessori School, and Murch Elementary School as well as St. Mark Presbyterian Church.  Last year, we collected 4,000 books; this year, we will have over 9,000 books to bring to our teachers!

MAY 2008 Capital BookShare's first Teacher BookShare event occurred on May 13, 2008 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in Washington, DC:

We had approximately 4,000 books to share, collected from book drives at The Field School in Washington, DC, Barrie School in Silver Spring, Maryland, The Green Acres School in Rockville, Maryland and St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland.

Two weeks before the event, we mailed 140 personal invitations to staff members at three of Turning the Page's 2007-08 partner schools.

Teachers from all three of those elementary schools attended our Teacher BookShare: Martin Luther King, Jr., Garfield, and M.C. Terrell.

Teachers were thrilled to come join us, enjoy refreshments after a long day, and choose free books!

Capital BookShare has 501(c)3 status through our partnership with Turning the Page.
