Capital BookShare grew out of a desire to help get books
into the hands of teachers in underresourced schools in Washington,
DC. The 2007-2008 school year was our inaugural year and, as such,
we started out small, helping to organize book drives in 3 schools
and one church, yielding approximately 4,000 books. With one successful
year now behind us, we have plans to grow the program every year.
We are a group of volunteers who, individually and collectively,
have worked on numerous nonprofit and volunteer projects in the
metro DC area for many years.

We
are very happy to be working in partnership with Turning
the Page (TTP), a Washington, DC nonprofit established in
1998 by a group of individuals moved by the visible needs of
DC public school students. TTP's mission is to link "D.C.
public schools, families and our community so that, together,
we can ensure D.C. students receive valuable educational resources
and a high-quality public education". Toward that end,
TTP's Families Learning Together programs work with 6-7 Title
I public schools each year. The books Capital BookShare collects
are shared with teachers in TTP's partner schools.
Capital BookShare has 501(c)3 status through our partnership
with Turning
the Page.
